AI app checks gym lifting form

A personal trainer from Wales has created an AI-powered app to help gym-goers improve their lifting form. The app, RepCheck, is designed for people who train alone and cannot afford a personal trainer.
How the App Works
RepCheck uses AI and pose detection technology to analyze videos of users performing key exercises. It analyzes four core lifts: squat, deadlift, bench press, and overhead press.
Users record a short video of their lift from the side and upload it to the app. The AI then maps joint positions and calculates movement angles. It compares the user’s form against established parameters.
The app gives a score out of 100, with a breakdown across five movement categories. It also provides specific coaching cues in plain English. Users can track their progress over time as each analysis is saved.
Founder’s Motivation
RepCheck was founded by Kian White, a qualified personal trainer from Caerphilly. He was inspired by seeing people train hard but make slow progress—or get hurt—because they never learned proper technique.
White believes the gap between people with access to good coaching and those without is too large. RepCheck is designed to provide affordable, accessible feedback to close that gap. The app costs 7.99 pounds a month after a three-day free trial.
“Bad form does not always cause problems straight away,” White explains. “It can build up over time. RepCheck is designed to give people the kind of feedback on their lifting that they would otherwise only receive from a qualified coach.”
Unique Approach
Unlike other fitness apps that focus on nutrition or workout logging, RepCheck specifically targets movement quality. The feedback is written by White himself, based on what he would say to a client in person.
“The feedback is designed to sound like a real PT because it was designed by one,” White said. “I wrote every coaching cue based on what I would actually say to a client standing in front of me. That is what makes RepCheck different.”
The app is currently in beta testing. A special founding member price of 4.99 pounds per month is available for the first 50 subscribers. It is set to launch on the iOS App Store this autumn, with Android support planned later.
Launch and Development
RepCheck launches on the iOS App Store this autumn with a three-day free trial. No payment is required to get started. The project is entirely self-funded, a bootstrapped startup from South Wales with global ambitions.
Kian built the app independently while continuing to run his personal training business. He is a PT, not a tech founder, and getting it built required an enormous amount of learning. He believes this is something the fitness world needs, and that belief has kept him going through every setback.
