CFIT Expands Open Finance Beyond Banking With Data

Small business owners frequently encounter extended timelines when attempting to secure necessary funding. The process often involves six months of back-and-forth communication and endless paperwork, frequently resulting in rejection despite the borrower having viable potential. Fraud victims recount similar experiences involving criminals exploiting gaps in corporate identity, despite complex regulatory spending. The UK fintech sector faces a risk of losing its competitive edge because innovations in AI and Smart Data fail to progress beyond pilot stages. Anna Wallace, CEO of the Centre for Finance, Innovation and Technology (CFIT), argues that coordination is the next frontier. CFIT, created by the 2021 Kalifa Review, aims to bring regulators, banks, tech firms, and government together to demand delivery.

Silos Are Blocking The UK’s Fintech Edge

Wallace notes that the sector remains held back by its siloed nature. When regulators, financial institutions, and government attempt to solve industry-wide challenges independently, progress slows significantly. CFIT bridges this gap by bringing stakeholders to the same table. Rather than competing, these groups can share infrastructure and develop common standards. This setup allows multiple players to build and compete, something that wouldn’t happen if everyone operated in isolation.

Tackling Fraud And Unlocking Credit

Digital Company IDs represent the necessary infrastructure to mitigate fraud risk. A single, reusable source of corporate identity can equip businesses with confidence. SMEs are still underserved. The average lending transaction takes six months. These rejections happen not due to a lack of capital, but a lack of visibility. CFIT tested tools like a Funding Health Checker, finding access to appropriate funding can unlock £5bn in credit.

Beyond Banking: Open Property

Open Finance helped establish the UK as a global leader by proving secure data sharing works. The next step is applying these Smart Data principles to sectors like property. This roadmap focuses on reducing delays, cutting costs, and digitizing paperwork. Wallace emphasizes that innovation only works when designed for accessibility. Direct input from organizations outside the fintech sector is essential to scale new innovations so they work for everyone, not just the digitally savvy.
