Chime announced a cash purchase of $590 million for Stride Bank, a partner with which it has worked for more than seven years. The transaction is slated to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory clearance, and the stock ended Thursday at $32.67 per share.

Deal Overview

The acquisition will convert Stride’s national bank charter into a wholly owned subsidiary named Chime Bank, N.A.. By creating a separate banking entity, the fintech gains the ability to offer a full-service bank under its own brand while keeping the original charter’s regulatory framework intact.

Regulatory approval remains a prerequisite, as is standard for bank takeovers.

Strategic Implications

Owning the bank eliminates the fees previously paid to a partner institution. It also gives the fintech direct control over product rollout speed and feature development, allowing faster experimentation with new digital tools.

The move reshapes the traditional fintech-bank relationship. Rather than layering services atop an external bank, the company will now own the underlying banking infrastructure.

Market Response

Investors reacted with a modest uptick, reflected in the closing price of $32.67. Analysts noted that the price incorporates expectations for long-term cost savings and a more streamlined operating model.

The announcement was filed in a quarterly report, which highlighted the strategic rationale without projecting immediate earnings impact. The report also mentioned that the cash outlay would be financed from existing liquidity, preserving the firm’s balance-sheet strength.

Future Outlook

Integrating a chartered bank brings compliance and operational challenges. The fintech will need to align legacy banking systems with its technology platform, a task that typically involves extensive data migration and system testing.
