The prop trading market has expanded globally since 2019, with significant growth in the United States.

In 2026, the term “proptech” has evolved beyond proprietary trading software. It now encompasses the technology powering proprietary trading firms, including evaluation systems, risk engines, payout systems, and trader portals. This shift reflects the industry’s rapid growth and changing trends, as the technology becomes integral to how retail traders access market capital.

A Market That Outgrew Its Own Software

Since 2019, the prop trading market has expanded globally, with the United States leading the way. Retail traders increasingly opt for evaluation challenges over traditional brokerage accounts, driving demand for funded account programs. This growth exposed weaknesses in many firms’ systems, as they struggled to manage tens of thousands of accounts with spreadsheets and manual processes. Firms that opened between 2020 and 2023 often relied on borrowed tools and manual payout approvals, which proved unsustainable as account numbers surged. The survivors were those that invested in purpose-built software, giving rise to the new wave of proptech.

Risk Management Takes Center Stage

In 2026, risk management is no longer a back-office function but a core product feature. Firms compete based on their platforms’ ability to measure drawdown, identify prohibited strategies, and price exposure differences between simulated and live trading. This shift has made risk engines a primary product differentiator.

This focus on risk has enabled operators to analyze challenge pass rates, payout frequency, and average payout size across large samples of prop accounts. The data reveals a sobering reality: only a small minority of traders successfully clear evaluations and achieve repeat withdrawals. This insight is possible because modern proptech records every account event, providing operators with data that was previously inaccessible. Five years ago, most firms lacked the tools to track these metrics, making honest marketing and reserve planning challenging.

AI Transforms Operations

Artificial intelligence has moved from pitch decks to production in the prop trading industry. 81% of surveyed financial firms use AI, with 40% describing their deployment as scaling or transforming. Notably, 53% spend less than $100,000 annually on AI, making it accessible to smaller operators. AI is applied in practical ways, such as detecting coordinated account rings, identifying news straddle abuse, triaging support tickets, and forecasting which trader segments will strain payout reserves.

As the industry matures, traders prioritize transparency and reliability. They compare firms based on payout timeliness, rule clarity, and withdrawal explanations. This shift in trader expectations has led to consolidation, with established operators capturing the majority of evaluation purchases. Repeat business from existing traders is becoming a significant source of revenue, rewarding firms that provide transparent disclosures, auditable trade records, and verifiable payout trails. Building such infrastructure is costly, favoring larger firms or those using shared platforms. Smaller entrants increasingly rely on turnkey solutions.

The Future of PropTech

The industry is moving towards multi-asset coverage, with platforms normalizing risk across diverse products like currencies, indices, futures, and digital assets. Evaluation models are evolving to provide instant funding and performance-based scaling, increasing the importance of live risk controls. Trader records are becoming portable, allowing verified track records to travel between firms. The vendor environment is also consolidating, as operators seek integrated solutions instead of managing multiple systems. Turnkey platforms are now the go-to choice for new entrants, enabling rapid launch and a focus on trader experience rather than software maintenance.

The prop trading industry’s evolution demonstrates that technology becomes a competitive advantage when retail participation outpaces system capabilities. Proptech, in both its original and new meanings, is shaping the future of this dynamic market.
