Nubank Launches in U.S. with Fee-Free Financial Products - fee-free launch
Nubank’s U.S. launch event took place in Miami, featuring founders David Vélez and Cristina Junqueira.

Nubank has officially launched its services in the United States, offering customers a range of financial products, including high-yield savings accounts, a no-fee credit card, and low-cost international transfers through its banking partner, Lead Bank.

At a launch event in Miami, founder and CEO David Vélez and co-founder Cristina Junqueira outlined the company’s initial product lineup. This includes deposit accounts with a 3.50% annual yield, fee-free international remittances, and a credit card with no annual fee that offers 1.5% cash back on purchases.

Nubank’s entry into the U.S. market comes after receiving conditional approval for a national bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in January. The company is currently undergoing review by the Federal Reserve and the FDIC. Junqueira stated that she expects Nubank to be fully operational under its own charter by next year. Until then, the company will operate through its partner-bank arrangement, a common approach for fintechs entering the American market.

Nubank’s success in Brazil can be attributed to its focus on eliminating fees and providing a superior customer experience. When Vélez, Junqueira, and Edward Wible founded the company in 2013, Brazil’s banking market was dominated by a few large banks known for high fees and poor service. Nubank’s strategy centered around offering a no-fee credit card and digital-only banking, allowing it to reach lower-income customers who had been excluded from traditional banking.

The company’s approach to underwriting also played a significant role in its success. By using alternative data to assess risk, Nubank was able to bring millions of previously excluded Brazilians into the credit-card market. This strategy has paid off, with Nubank now serving over 60% of Brazil’s adult population and becoming the country’s most valuable financial brand.

As Nubank expands into the United States, it brings a proven track record of disrupting traditional banking and prioritizing customer experience. With its focus on high-yield savings, no-fee products, and digital convenience, Nubank aims to replicate its Brazilian success in the U.S. market, offering a fresh alternative to traditional banks. The company’s partner-bank arrangement with Lead Bank will enable it to quickly scale its operations as it awaits full regulatory approval.
